Origin Story The pilot announces that we’ll soon be pushing back on the tarmac, and I start to spread out. Just then, bursts of laughter cut through the air, and the expectation of a spacious flight to Los Angeles rapidly disappears. It’s 2018, and I watch as a pair of 20-somethings, who look as if they’ve just stepped out of a panel at Comic-Con, come bounding down the aisle. Both are wearing cat ears attached to a plastic arch that rests on their heads. Settling into the two empty seats by my side, they are animated, their chatter is infectious. […]

Building a Monster in Two Months: On Frankenstein AI: a monster made by many‘s Race to Sundance https://filmmakermagazine.com/104706-104706/ https://filmmakermagazine.com/104706-104706/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 20:42:49 +0000 https://filmmakermagazine.com/?p=104706

The lobby is packed. Within minutes of opening, a line has formed for Frankenstein AI: a monster made by many, and we’re completely booked for the day. Festival-goers curious about emergent forms of storytelling weave their way through the New Frontier section of the festival, a labyrinth of VR, AR and AI. Now in its 11th year, Sundance’s New Frontier is hosted in two venues and has expanded to over 30 exhibitions ranging from individual experiences to a social VR theater for close to 100 participants. The last few months have been a whirlwind. On November 13th I received an […]

I recall the first time I heard the word “Sundance” uttered. A friend had returned from the mythical mountains of Utah and, like a sage returning home from a quest, dropped a book in front of me. I scoured that festival program guide — studying every photo and accompanying film description — hoping that some filmmaking knowledge, and maybe even a little magic, would rub off on me. It was the early ’90s, and indie film was filled with starry-eyed promise. After all, those were the days of pre-sales, physical media and the elusive multi-picture deal. When I finally made […]

Columbia University’s Digital Storytelling Lab (DSL) is launching a monthly live event and podcast on the changing nature of storytelling in partnership with New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center. “Convergent: Columbia DSL Live at the Film Society of Lincoln Center” will explore new forms and functions of storytelling and pull back the curtain on what’s required to tell stories in the digital age. The initial program, to be held at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center on Tuesday, Feb. 23, will celebrate the Lab’s first annual “Digital Dozen: Breakthroughs in Storytelling” with a line\up of speakers that includes New […]

This weekend at the New York Film Festival, Sherlock Holmes & the Internet of Things will convert Lincoln Center into a massive crime scene. Come step into an immersive storytelling experience that enables you to become Sherlock Holmes. - "It’s pitch dark. A faint chatter spills across the theater. Someone clears their throat and everything goes still. A ringing cuts the silence. It has a crispness, a tone that signals the sound of actual metal vibrating. Just on the edge of piercing, it’s an old school ring, one that now only exists in classic cinema or reruns of pre ’80s TV shows..." Read More

Creative Code https://filmmakermagazine.com/61920-creative-code/ https://filmmakermagazine.com/61920-creative-code/#comments Tue, 08 Jan 2013 15:30:21 +0000 https://filmmakermagazine.com/?p=61920

Developing an understanding of code is a valuable skill. In fact its now a 21st century storytelling reality. While it’s not critical for you to rush off and learn how to code, it wouldn’t hurt to become more familiar with the terminology, process and realities of producing digital / interactive projects. As filmmakers expand their work beyond a single screen new roles such as creative technologists are emerging to bridge the gap between tech and story. The role has been adapted within ad agencies, interactive firms and media companies as a way to plan and execute digital strategies. At the […]

Twine Unboxing https://filmmakermagazine.com/61471-twine-unboxing/ https://filmmakermagazine.com/61471-twine-unboxing/#comments Wed, 02 Jan 2013 14:30:00 +0000 https://filmmakermagazine.com/?p=61471

Last year I wrote about Twine, an easy-to-use sensor kit that broke out on Kickstarter by raising 1,500% over their initial ask. The interest in Twine was so strong that their goal of $35k ended up bringing in over $500k. The concept taps directly into the “internet of things,” where interactions involving everyday objects are given a voice. Since contributing to the project, I’ve been waiting anxiously for my Twine to arrive. In December, it finally came and I immediately put it to work in a storytelling context with my students at Columbia University. Listen to your world talk to […]

CULTURE HACKER: A STORYTELLING PANDEMIC https://filmmakermagazine.com/18902-culture-hacker-a-storytelling-pandemic/ https://filmmakermagazine.com/18902-culture-hacker-a-storytelling-pandemic/#comments Wed, 19 Jan 2011 02:30:05 +0000 http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/news/?p=18902 Originally printed in our Winter 2011 issue, grab a free issue of Filmmaker at Sundance to be a part of Pandemic 1.o. When the phone rings I’m feeling a bit nervous. The voice on the other end is slow and calculated. “We can do 30,000 but it will take 10 weeks. In order to get it in time for Sundance we need to order 500,000 and ship from China… We’re going to have to find another way.” Not quite your normal Sundance prep conversation, especially when the items in question are bottles of water. But these are not regular bottles […]

The WorkBook Project Discovery and Distribution Award gives a filmmaker an amazing prize consisting of a week long theatrical run in LA with social media, street team and PR support. A run where the filmmaker keeps the box office and we help to pull together the independent community in an effort to drive awareness around the film. Over a 100 films were submitted and today […]
