The unrestricted $25,000 cash grant will be offered to a woman, non-binary or trans filmmaker 39 years or older who has not yet helmed a narrative feature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grant was established by Northwest Film Forum alongside Duplass Brothers Productions in 2020 after Lynn Shelton\u2019s untimely passing. Some of the late, Seattle-based director\u2019s films include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Go Way Back<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (her 2006 debut feature), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humpday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2009), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laggies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sword of Trust<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2019). Shelton was inspired to make her first film at age 39 after learning that French auteur Claire Denis did not direct her first feature until she was 40-years-old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inaugural recipient of the grant in 2020 was Miami-based filmmaker Keisha Rae Witherspoon, who was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/filmmakermagazine.com\/people\/keisha-rae-witherspoon\/#.Ys2zfezMLfs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of Filmmaker\u2019s 25 New Faces of Film<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that same year. Erica Tremblay, who recently wrote and directed an episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/filmmakermagazine.com\/112607-the-film-is-one-big-conversation-i-couldve-cut-it-ten-different-ways-and-it-would-still-be-the-same-conversation-sterlin-harjo-on-his-netflix-doc-love-and-fury\/#.Ys21hOzMLfs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FX\/Hulu\u2019s Reservation Dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was the 2021 grant recipient.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be an online info session on Tuesday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. PST. The first half of the session, conducted by Executive Director Cara Mia Harris and Grants Manager Mikayla Nicholson, will detail the application process.
